David W Ebel: Welcome to another episode of God Says Yes. My name is David Ebel, and I'm your host. After 50 plus years of ministry, we are privileged to be able to continue to share God's love with people around the world. our my mission has always been to reach those that are struggling. We don't always struggle all the time, but when we struggle, we you can always use some a a hand up or encouragement. And that's what this podcast is. Whether you're struggling or you know someone who's struggling. We're a place for you. Sometimes the the the best part is you you watch an episode and you think of somebody, I got a cousin who needs to see this. And you can share it with them and it'll be a blessing to them. So that's why we're here. We're here to meet people where they're at. God created them to love. They've always been loved, they will always be loved. They can't even do anything that's so bad that God won't love them. They he because he made them that way. So they're precious to him always. So you matter. You met her to God in ways you've never dreamed. So today I have with me a lovely sister in the Lord, Mariah Hagel. Mariah is a neat lady. She loves God and she's been consistently loving God a long time. And that it to me is the greatest testimony you can have. You don't have to have thirty eight crises before before you meet him. You can meet him and he can keep you from pain and suffering. And then when you do have difficult times, which they'll happen to everybody, he's there. He never leaves us or forsakes us. He's with us always. So Ryan, we're so glad you're here. Welcome.

Moriah Hagel: Thank you very much for having me, David. It is a privilege to be on here and to speak with your listeners and tell them about what God's doing and encourage them.

David W Ebel: Amen. And we're grateful you're here. Well, we don't talk to strangers around here very often. We but we make a lot of friends. So why don't you tell us about so everyone knows who you are?

Moriah Hagel: All right, I am Mariah Hagel, living currently in Wetemka, Alabama. I am the sixth child of ten. we've got a big bunch at home. Well, not at home anymore, because most of them are married. I love God and I enjoy teaching his word, encouraging individuals in the seasons of life that they're in. with that, he's led me to write three different Bible study books and to do a young adults conference. for individuals in their twenties and thirties just with a heart to encourage that specific age range of people.

David W Ebel: Wonderful. That's great. But right now we always have these these simple questions we ask. And we do that so that there's a consistency, but more importantly, so that people can know that God meets us where we're at. He builds

Moriah Hagel: Mm-hmm.

David W Ebel: a personal relationship. So there when he meets you, it's not going to be like it is for me or how it is for you. It's gonna be how it is for our viewers and our listeners, because he he takes us the way we are. It's come as you are, it's not come as you think you need to be,

Moriah Hagel: Okay.

David W Ebel: or I get rid of all your problems, then come to No, it's just come as

Moriah Hagel: Amen.

David W Ebel: you are. Let him love you, and then he'll help you with the things that hurt, the things that are hard.

Moriah Hagel: Yes.

David W Ebel: He'll give you peace even in your storm. He doesn't remove all the storms, but he never he's always with you in them and gives you courage and strength to get through them. That's a great place to start. So

Moriah Hagel: It is.

David W Ebel: Mariah, tell me about who you were before Jesus.

Moriah Hagel: Who I was before Jesus, I was a little girl. I grew up in a Christian home. My parents loved God and served him diligently. So I didn't really know a time without him, but he wasn't mine yet. I tried

David W Ebel: Mm-hmm.

Moriah Hagel: to do good, I tried to obey my parents. honestly, as God has grown me, he showed me that One of my struggles was pride because I knew the right things to say and the right things to do, but it wasn't a relationship yet. So at eight years old, I finally got baptized. It was on Mother's Day and We were down at a creek that runs through the back part of our property. My older sister was getting baptized and my best friend at the time was. And Dad looked at me and said, Didn't you want to get baptized? And I was like, Yeah. But mom had asked me to wait till Father's Day to make it more special for Dad 'cause my sister was getting baptized on Mother's Day. But Dad was like, Come on in So got baptized on Mother's Day with my big sister.

David W Ebel: Wonderful. And then how did you meet Jesus? When did he become real in your life?

Moriah Hagel: so while I got baptized at eight, it didn't really become real until about fourteen. I distinctly remember we had a fifteen passenger van at the time and I was sitting somewhere close to the back and we were on a if any of your listeners have been in Alabama, we were on the Northern Boulevard about to turn on to two thirty one and I was looking out the window and it was It was a realization that God gave me, which was if if I'm gonna spend eternity with this person called God, I need to know him for myself and have a relationship with him. And so through that and through my sister two above me challenging me to read my Bible in a year, I was a late bloomer. I was the last person to do it. And so I I read my Bible in a year and God began to change and become more real to me.

David W Ebel: Mm-hmm.

Moriah Hagel: And so that's really when he became real and had a relationship and then it's been gross spurts ever since where twenty twenty and twenty one was a really big gross spurt where he became even more real and ever since then it's been a continual growth in getting to know more about him, finding out about his love, finding out about his commitment to stay with us through the whole thing. And no matter what we walk through, he's willing to walk with us through it. And he's never gonna call us to something that he's not willing to process with us.

David W Ebel: I I truly believe he doesn't he doesn't give you a task if he hasn't prepared you for it.

Moriah Hagel: Yes. Very much.

David W Ebel: So I so even though you may not understand why why am I doing this right

Moriah Hagel: Mm-hmm.

David W Ebel: now, a little while later you're gonna go, that's because you my new assignment from God, need I needed those talents and those gifts.

Moriah Hagel: Very much so.

David W Ebel: And and so each time y you go through something and it's a little stressful or a little straining, you can always go back and look in the mirror and say, This must be a boot camp experience. I'm gonna learn something important out of this. And

Moriah Hagel: Exactly. Exactly.

David W Ebel: and that's a good thing, you know, that it also reminds us that he never leaves us or forsakes us. He's with us always. So

Moriah Hagel: Always.

David W Ebel: good times and bad, fun times and tragic times, he's always there. You know, when when things go well, but a lot of times our mind says, Well, thanks God, I can handle it now.

Moriah Hagel: Lord help us.

David W Ebel: And and and then when things fall apart it's God, where have you been? I need you now. But the

Moriah Hagel: Uh-huh. Uh-huh.

David W Ebel: thing is he never he was always there. If

Moriah Hagel: Yeah.

David W Ebel: if you'd I used to have a bumper sticker when I was a new believer, it says, If if God seems so far away, guess who moved?

Moriah Hagel: Yeah.

David W Ebel: And that's I think that's a real truth that we need to we need to be in in love with him enough that regardless of what's going on, we're in love with him and we trust him. It's like having

Moriah Hagel: Yes.

David W Ebel: the the the the daddy of the universe, the perfect dad, the one who has nothing else concerning him other than taking care of his kids. Being supernatural,

Moriah Hagel: Mm-hmm.

David W Ebel: he can do all the other things he wants, but is still still got we still have his full attention.

Moriah Hagel: Yes.

David W Ebel: And boy, what a to know that God knows us down to the how many hairs we have on our head. That's a big deal. Now, for me it's getting easier for him.

Moriah Hagel: Yeah.

David W Ebel: But that's okay. He counts them when they fall, so it's they're still his. And

Moriah Hagel: Yes, they are.

David W Ebel: you know, and I'm okay, I'm okay with my hairline changing because that that means the inside is changing too. And I'm grateful that the inside continues to change to glorify him.

Moriah Hagel: Very true.

David W Ebel: So now, now that you've given your heart to Jesus, tell us about your life.

Moriah Hagel: Well, for most people it was probably a pretty normal life. But I began in when I was twenty. We were out of college and my mom had asked us asked us to do a do it at home retreat, where we tithed our time. So you have twenty four hours in a day, so we gave God two hours and forty minutes of our day. And it was either spent in prayer or contemplating something from scripture, things along those lines, where we began to grow with him and learn from him. and so that kind of projected me towards deepening my walk with God, spending time in his word and just loving to be at his feet. And so we would I I say we, by that I mean the Lord and I. We would get up early in the morning. And we would begin opening up a a book of the Bible and say, Okay, Lord, teach me something from here. The college I attended was well known for getting the MRS degree of marrying the students with other students that so much so they almost had it on a billboard, but they couldn't technically do that. so Singleness was a challenge at the time anyway, but especially in a college where that was expected and very much encouraged. And so God and I went through a lot of different conversations about that, a lot of different struggles through that. 'cause sometimes it's just hard to be to be a single Christian, but just to be single in general, when marriage is something that you want. And so we were doing a Bible study on campus. And we got to Ephesians chapter four. And I worked at the coffee shop and I asked God to help me teach that that section because there was there's a partlet about submitting one to another and it's about wives submitting to your husbands. And I saw so many of the girls at school, it was all girls Bible study, they were ready to submit to their boyfriends, and that's not what the Bible says. It says to submit to your husbands. I said, God, how can I teach this? Submission in itself is a difficult and challenging topic to go over in today's society. And I was working at a coffee shop on campus and we played Christian music there and the song came on Like a Bride Waiting for Her Groom, We will be at Church Ready for You And I was like, Yep, that's really hard, God. And he's like, And that's what you're gonna teach on tonight. I was like, Okay, what are you gonna give me? What What what what do I need to start preparing? And he said, That's all I'm gonna tell you. And so that night at Bible study, he taught Ephesians four in a way I hadn't understood it before. In a way that when we were done, my two older sisters we were all at college together, and so we would attend attend each other's Bible studies. And we were driving home, which was a hours commute, and we got in the car and I said, What did I say? 'Cause I literally couldn't have told you what I said. I I remembered parts of it. And that began me on a journey of addressing singleness for other individuals and my struggles and theirs as well. So the following semester I asked God to rewalk me through the book of Ephesians. And that is where my first book came was first and forever singleness in Ephesians and it came from God in my personal Bible study time in the morning. And when God is feeding you and when God is teaching you things in the mornings, it changes you and you get excited to go to go be at school. You get excited to go tell people about what God's teaching you and it it just comes out more readily when you spend that time with God. Now there have been other times where I would talk to mom and I would be like, Mom, I feel like I'm in a desert at the moment. I'm not getting anything out of my Bible reading. I'm not getting anything out of my prayer time. And to which I love to remind myself of the verse in Proverbs, which it says, Commit your works to the Lord and your thoughts will be established. So when you get to that dry time, you continuously say, Nope, I'm going to keep doing this. I'm going to keep doing this. The feelings will come back. The The desire, the hunger, it'll all come back. I'm just gonna keep doing what God wants. So there there are lulls in that. but I graduated college and started working at a local law firm, which provided me great opportunity for the other things that God asks for me to do. in December thirty first of twenty eighteen, I was still single. I still am single. not for long, but I I was still single at the time and I said, Lord, if you're gonna keep me single I need a project. 'cause it was it was another hard single year. They come and they go. And so he said, Well, it's time and oddly enough I knew what it's time meant. it meant that it was time to do the young adults conference. so we started in September of twenty nineteen we started the Seasons Young Adults Conference, which comes from Ecclesiastes three, to everything there's a time and a season and a purpose under heaven. And it was really just I didn't want to waste my singleness. If God has me in the season of singleness, then he has me in it for a reason. And so it's time for me to be about his business. So we wanted to encourage everyone that singleness in itself was is just a season of life. And God has a purpose for it. If He's left you in it, then God has a purpose for you while you're single. And our job is to serve Him. And so we wanted to encourage them. We wanted to encourage them that they're not alone and we just wanted to get their feet under him and their f and their eyes back on Jesus. So we did that. in twenty twenty-four, my second book was published, which was Alignment, God's Will or Mine. It's a forty-eight day study in the book of James. And that one That one was another one of those gross spurts with God where he encouraged me to get in alignment with him. I was praying for somebody else to get in alignment with him and he began working on me, which seems to be his way. He probably

David W Ebel: Mm-hmm.

Moriah Hagel: was working with them at the same time, but all I felt and all I could see was him working on me, which is humbling and and good. And it's just a matter of trusting God and knowing what he does is best. And then Let's see after that, we did we did my most recent book, which came out this in the month of September of 2026. And that one was To Live, Finding the Mind of Christ. And what that one really addresses is finding your identity in Christ. Because even even if you've been in the Christian world a long time, like I have.

David W Ebel: Mm-hmm.

Moriah Hagel: Sometimes it's still hard to find your identity in Christ because we get busy and we we find our identity in our jobs. We find our identity in our relationships. We find our identity.

David W Ebel: Mm-hmm.

Moriah Hagel: I find my identity in being from a big family. Or in sometimes we find our identity in our church and our Sunday school class. And those are all good things. But if our identity isn't in Christ, then then we're building a house on sand. Because

David W Ebel: Mm-hmm.

Moriah Hagel: he's the one, he is the rock. He is the one thing that will not move when the storms come. And so that one that one touches something that I find to be very a very deep struggle that women have, and I assume guys have it too, but I can only speak from a woman's perspective, of finding your identity right there with God so that when difficult times come, when challenges arise. you can stay firm in knowing that God knows who you are and that you're being who God wants you to be. And it's to try and help us find his mindset because it it kind of goes back to that thing when I was twelve years old of if we're gonna be with him for forever, if we want to be like Jesus, which is his good and faithful servant, then we need to start thinking like him. And so it it takes you down both of those paths of finding your identity in him as well as cultivating the mindset of Christ.

David W Ebel: I'd like to read that one.

Moriah Hagel: I enjoyed it.

David W Ebel: Well, you've you've really shared a lot of good stuff. I'm I'm grateful that God allowed us to get together.

Moriah Hagel: I am too.

David W Ebel: This has been fun. You know, and people say, Well, you're a Christian, how do you have fun? Well there's a lot of ways to have fun.

Moriah Hagel: There's a lot of ways to have fun.

David W Ebel: And and I I remember my cousin trying to tell me about Jesus before I was saved. And

Moriah Hagel: Mm.

David W Ebel: he I said, Well what do you do when you're you know, we he after we were at a funeral home and I went to eat I was hungry and I I was thirsty for the wrong things. But he he said, I'll go with you. And I said, I'm going to go to a bar. He says, Did they sell Coca Cola in the bottle? Yeah, well I'll drink it out of the bottle. You drink whatever you want, and we'll have pizza. And while he was talk there, he started telling me about Jesus and I said I said first question was, How can you have fun?

Moriah Hagel: Ha ha

David W Ebel: And he says, Well we we have lots of fun. I said, I don't get that. I mean I don't even start having fun till my third drink. And he says, Well we have this thing called fellowship. I said, Is that where you all get in the boat and sink?

Moriah Hagel: Ha

David W Ebel: And he said, No, actually you get in the boat and it gets better because you get you find people who are like you and then you help

Moriah Hagel: Yeah.

David W Ebel: each other sta stay on top. Nobody drowns. Everybody g gets helps each other get better and further ahead. And when I when I gave my heart to Jesus, what do you think was the first person that came to mind? My cousin. And I called him and said, I'm in the boat. And

Moriah Hagel: Your cousin. Nice.

David W Ebel: he said, Thank God it took you long enough.

Moriah Hagel: Uh-huh.

David W Ebel: And for the rest of his life we had a mutual admiration society where, you know, he he got me started and then he was my ch my cheerleader.

Moriah Hagel: That's awesome.

David W Ebel: And that's what what you're doing with those that you're investing in. You you you you find they help them to figure out how to into the fellowship, how to how to read and to pray and to study and how to

Moriah Hagel: Mm-hmm.

David W Ebel: figure out who to hang around and and who to let go. Because

Moriah Hagel: Yeah.

David W Ebel: some of the people in your life can be toxic.

Moriah Hagel: They can.

David W Ebel: They can be anti God instead of for God in your life.

Moriah Hagel: Very true.

David W Ebel: And so what you're doing is primarily exactly the heart of God. And we all need to be doing it to it. We may not do it as good as you, but we all need to do our best with it. See, it all God asks of us is our best. He doesn't ask

Moriah Hagel: Yes, it does.

David W Ebel: us to be as good as anybody else, but he wants your best shot. And I see

Moriah Hagel: Absolutely.

David W Ebel: that in you. You're giving your best shot, and that's why God is blessing it.

Moriah Hagel: Thank you. Thank you.

David W Ebel: And for those that are viewing and listening, understand that God has a plan and your name is on it. He has planned for your your life in so many ways, but he's not going to make you do something you don't want to do. He's a gentleman. He'll love you into it, he'll guide you into it, but the final choice is yours. But if you choose his will, you're going to have to know him to be able to do his will. And that's what you're talking about in your books is how do we get to know him? Not know him. Know him. All of us be involved in the process.

Moriah Hagel: Yes.

David W Ebel: And your living testimony that you know, you've been single a long time. I'm sure there's been opportunities or temptations to to end your singleness sooner, but God wasn't it wasn't in it, and you were

Moriah Hagel: I guess. No.

David W Ebel: wise enough to wait for to be picky and wait for the one God gave you instead of the easy one.

Moriah Hagel: And the one God has for you is so much better than the easy.

David W Ebel: So going to college and getting your MRS degree, as you said, which means go to college to to get a mate. you know, it's it is a way to do it. And I have I have many friends, that's what they did.

Moriah Hagel: Mm.

David W Ebel: And then I've talked to them privately and they'll tell you publicly, they'll tell you, it's the greatest thing in the world and then when you're privately what they're going, you know.

Moriah Hagel: Yeah.

David W Ebel: You know, I signed up for a lifetime and I'm gonna do it. But there are moments maybe God has someone else for me.

Moriah Hagel: Mm.

David W Ebel: But I've already made my commitment to God and to my mate. So I'm gonna,

Moriah Hagel: Mm-hmm.

David W Ebel: you know, I'm in this for a lifetime. But

Moriah Hagel: Yes.

David W Ebel: what else would could it have been? But when you do when you wait for God to give you the right one, you will never have that doubt.

Moriah Hagel: Nope.

David W Ebel: W when God gave me my mate, I tell you, I couldn't have picked her out I couldn't have picked her out in a book full of pictures. I would have I would have never dreamed or imagined having a relationship like I have. I mean,

Moriah Hagel: Mm.

David W Ebel: she she's be when I met her, she was the one of the most beautiful women I'd ever I'd ever known. Not because she was mine. In my mind when I saw her, I saw y you know, I I don't know if everybody's got a yardstick like this, but mine went, too pretty for me, she must be for somebody else. Automatically.

Moriah Hagel: Uh-huh.

David W Ebel: I didn't e so I I always saw the ones that were untouchable to me as just beautiful

Moriah Hagel: Mm-hmm.

David W Ebel: people I got to know. But I didn't even have a a a romantic thought because they were beyond me in my the measure in my health. When I

Moriah Hagel: Mm-hmm.

David W Ebel: met her, my f ev even my best friends came up and said, you know, she's way out of your scale, bud. You know, you you've

Moriah Hagel: Uh-huh.

David W Ebel: only been married less than a year. We've been married much longer. We're waiting to get married, and here you are Taking girls out that are way beyond you. You realize how how odd that is? And I said, Well the whole thing is odd. You know, I didn't expect

Moriah Hagel: Yeah.

David W Ebel: a girl in my life for years. I w

Moriah Hagel: Yeah.

David W Ebel: I accepted the fact that I might be someone who never marries. I whatever it I mean, I want to be married, but I don't want to do

Moriah Hagel: Mm.

David W Ebel: it unless God is in it.

Moriah Hagel: Absolutely.

David W Ebel: And we took her I took her to church in in in in Feb I met her in February, took her to church in March, and God put us together in such an amazing way. June eighth of that same year we married.

Moriah Hagel: Wow.

David W Ebel: And that's fifty two and a half years ago. So yeah, if God is in it, he's in all of it.

Moriah Hagel: Yes, he is.

David W Ebel: And so I'm I'm I'm grateful to your sharing this with us because some of us need to hear this. Some of us already get have gotten it, but there's a lot

Moriah Hagel: Mm.

David W Ebel: of things they still need to learn. But if this can help somebody. Or if

Moriah Hagel: Exactly.

David W Ebel: if you've already made the bad decision and there you're even a divorce or two behind,

Moriah Hagel: Mm.

David W Ebel: God's going to meet you where you're at. He's not going to shame you for what he forgives.

Moriah Hagel: Yes, you will.

David W Ebel: If you confess your sin, your willing your self self-deriven choices to him. He is faithful and just to forgive you of your sin and of all the unright things you've done. When he does that,

Moriah Hagel: Yes, he is.

David W Ebel: and you give your heart to Jesus. He's going to start you over again. And then he will guide your steps. He will provide your ways. He will sort it out. And he's not going to say, well, you made all these bad choices, so I can't do anything with you. No. You made your bad choices, then you came to me. Now I'm going to do something with you. I have a plan just for you. And that's what I want for everyone to know is that God has a plan just for you.

Moriah Hagel: Human.

David W Ebel: No, at the as we close our our sessions we always ask for a golden nugget, something that that you from your heart would like when the podcast ends, and

Moriah Hagel: Mm.

David W Ebel: for that people could take with them and think about, mull over, pray over, contemplate, whatever way they process things, so for the next week or two they can they have something to to mull on. What would it what would your golden nugget be?

Moriah Hagel: The sovereignty of God. Couple years ago, God and I walked through a time where my poor family, we've had three about to be four weddings in four years. but we had we had my younger sister got married, my older sister got married, and then my baby sister was about to get engaged. And through this process, there was a guy in my life that I wanted to date and mom and dad did not have peace about it. And so God and I had to walk through the path of of submitting and trusting God to work through my parents and trusting God to confirm his will to myself and to this guy and my parents. And that was a very difficult, one of the most difficult things I've had to walk through. So far, where I got to see God every step of the way. And the reason I would say the sovereignty of God is because so much of what we believe and how we live is based off of how we think about God. And if we can get to the point where we understand that God is sovereign and that He has everything in our lives for a reason, He knows who you are supposed to be born to, He knows who Your mate is, if you have one, he knows exactly what year and what time you were gonna be born. He knows the people that you're gonna interact with. He knows so many things about you, including the number of hairs on your head. If we can believe that he's sovereign, then we can trust him. And say when the hard times come, when the struggles are real, we can say, God, I know you're sovereign. God, I know you're good. And because you're sovereign, you're allowing this for a reason. And I'm gonna trust you through it. Because you're sovereign, because you're good, I know that you'll walk with me through this. Because to me, understanding the sovereignty of God helps us to trust him more. And it also helps us to trust those that he puts as our spiritual counselors. Because I could say, Lord, if you can change Pharaoh's heart, if you can talk through a donkey, then speaking to my godly dad. is no problem for you and I will trust your answer through that. And God gave his answer. It wasn't what I wanted, but I got to feel his love through the whole thing. And then three years later from that, he brought by the right guy with so many things where you you said when the right one comes, God is in it all over it. Yes, exactly. and I got to see that one thing that God told me during my struggle was if you knew what I had for you, this would be easy. And that's true. If all of us knew the path that God had for us, if we knew the good things that God has, then giving up the things that He asks us to give up would be so easy. I don't mean that just in marriage or just in a mate, but in life,

David W Ebel: Mm-hmm.

Moriah Hagel: if we just trust God and trust His sovereignty Then we will do what David said in the Psalms that we will see the glory of God in the land of the living. And this isn't

David W Ebel: Exactly.

Moriah Hagel: it's not a name it claim it, it's just when we trust God and when we love God, we will get to see his hand and we will get to see his sovereignty in it, and that will grow our trust in God, and when our trust in God is at high peak, we can get through anything.

David W Ebel: Amen. Amen. That's well said. there's a lot to chew on there, and I hope people will take it and take it to heart. And even if it's not something they need personally, it may be something that they have someone in their their world of influence that needs it.
